Five Nooks, One Afternoon: Where the Inn Sleeps Best (That Isn't a Bed)

There's a rumor going around that people visit The Breezy Inn to do things. Kayaking, lighthouse tours, that sort of thing. And sure, those happen. But if you hang around the front desk long enough, you'll notice what guests actually rave about on their way out the door: the naps.

Not the beds — though the beds are lovely. We mean the unofficial napping infrastructure of the whole property. The spots nobody put on the website because, frankly, we weren't sure they were a feature until guests started claiming them like territory. After many seasons of careful observation (and one very committed guest who rated every location on a notepad), we present the official-ish rankings.

1. The Hammock Between the Live Oaks

Let's just settle the debate up front: the hammock wins. It's strung between two live oaks old enough to have opinions, and it catches the afternoon breeze coming off the water at exactly the angle nature intended.

Breeze factor: 10/10. Ambient sound: Rustling leaves with a faint gull soundtrack. Sun exposure: Dappled, which is the fancy word for perfect.

Best paired with: the over-planner who hasn't slept properly since March. Something about the slight sway resets a person. We've watched type-A executives go from answering emails to drooling on a canvas strap in under eleven minutes.

2. The Parlor Window Seat

The built-in window seat in the parlor faces east, which means it becomes a slow-roasting solar collector from about two in the afternoon onward. Add a quilt from the basket by the settee and you've got the closest thing to a nap in a sunbeam that adult life legally allows.

Breeze factor: 6/10 (window cracks open on request). Ambient sound: Whatever record is spinning, muffled and distant. Sun exposure: Aggressive, in the best way.

Best paired with: the reader. This is the spot where people fall asleep mid-chapter and wake up with a page-shaped tan line on one arm. It's practically a souvenir.

3. The Porch Swing, East End

The porch has its own social ecosystem (longtime readers know this), and the east end of the swing is the quiet corner. Gentle motion, the smell of salt and honeysuckle, and just enough creak to remind you that you're not at home answering anything.

Breeze factor: 9/10. Ambient sound: Creak, distant waves, the occasional bicycle bell from the lane. Sun exposure: Shade by mid-afternoon.

Best paired with: couples. Fair warning — the swing has a documented 40% chance of turning a twenty-minute nap into a two-hour one for two people at once. Plan your dinner reservations accordingly.

4. The Window Nook on the Stair Landing

Our sleeper pick, pun fully intended. Halfway up the stairs there's a landing with a wide sill and a view over the garden that most guests walk past without a second glance. The ones who discover it tend to guard the knowledge like a fishing spot.

Breeze factor: 7/10. Ambient sound: House sounds — kettle whistles, floorboards, life happening pleasantly somewhere else. Sun exposure: Morning only, so this one's for the jet-lagged and the early risers who've given up.

Best paired with: the introvert at a family reunion reunion-style getaway who needs fifteen minutes of not talking to anyone. We see you. The landing sees you.

5. The Beach Chairs Below the Dune Line

Technically outside our property line, but the lifeguards have never complained. Below the dune line, the wind smooths out, the sound of the surf doubles, and the chairs we keep stacked by the boardwalk crossover are free for the taking.

Breeze factor: 8/10, steady. Ambient sound: Full stereo surf, white noise at its finest. Sun exposure: Whatever you can handle — bring the good sunscreen.

Best paired with: everyone on day three of vacation, when the body finally believes it's allowed to rest.

A Note on Nap Ethics

We do ask one thing: if you claim a spot with a book, a drink, or a hat, those items hold your reservation. Bodies alone do not. This is the only rule of napping at The Breezy Inn, and it has held for years without a single dispute.

And if you doze through the activity you booked? Tell us honestly at breakfast. Nine times out of ten, someone at the table will say the same thing happened to them, and you'll have made a friend. That's kind of the whole business model.
